Care Market Review

This tool refreshes daily via the CQC Care Directory API with details of the latest active adult social care locations in England (with the ability to also view recent deactivations). An active adult social care location is defined as:

HSCA End Date = blank (i.e. the location is active) or has an end date in the last 12 months (recently deactivated locations)
Location Type = Social Care Org
Location Primary Inspection Category = Residential social care, or Community based adult social care services
Service Type = Care home service with nursing, Care home service without nursing, Domiciliary care service, Extra care housing services, Shared lives, or Supported living service

Please note: Dormant locations can also be active registrations. These can be filtered out within the tool. The results also include dual registrations (circa 200 locations in England) which are associated with primary locations, but are not directly involved in care provision. CQC do not currently identify dual registrations in their API, but they do publish a list of these separately in their ‘Care Directory with filters’ output file here.

The tool is free to use without a sign in. However, additional capacity tracker information is available to LG Inform Plus subscribers after they have signed in.

CQC are currently moving to a new assessment approach and digital system to store and update the care directory. Location-level ratings are being replaced with service-level ratings under the new approach. This means that locations providing one or more service types will no longer receive single location-level ratings for all domains, but two or more service-level ratings. This applies to approximately one quarter of adult social care locations, typically where homecare and supported living are registered at the same location. The LGA continue to review how this information pulls through to the Care Market Review tool. We have agreed a pragmatic approach with the CQC to retain the latest available ratings for locations based on publication date, until all locations have been inspected under the new approach. The same methodology is also applied to the aggregate monthly metrics in LG Inform, which are generated as a snapshot of the Care Directory API data on the 1st of every month. These metrics feature in the Local registered care market LG Inform report, and other Adult Social Care Themed Reports.
